I was inspired by these pretty painted leaves and thought I might try some of my own. Materials used: leaves, gouache paints, paintbrush, permanent marker with small tip.
I followed this great tutorial for dyed easter eggs. This was so much harder than I thought it would be. Below you can read how I made them.
Eggs, leaves, nylon stockings, rubber bands, food coloring, glass of water, white vinegar
1. Wrap the a leaf around the egg and secure it with a piece of nylon stocking and rubberband
2. Add food coloring and a teaspoon of white vinegar to a glass of warm water
3. Place the egg in the colored water for about 5 minutes
4. Remove the egg from the water and carefully remove the nylon stocking so it can dry
Wear gloves, the food coloring will stain your hands.
For the photo below I made my own heart shaped bokeh, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I was a bit lazy and didn’t make a cap for the lens but simply held my cut-out in front of the lens.
I set my camera to manual mode and set my 50mm f1.8 lens to manual focus. If you use auto focus for this shot your camera will automatically focus on your christmas lights and you won’t get the pretty bokeh.
It was a little tricky trying to get the right exposure because the heart shaped cut-out blocked a lot of light, so I bumped up my ISO to 1600, and set my aperture to f2.0 and my shutterspeed to 1/30.
